Parts of Speech


There are 8 parts of speech in English grammar. They tell us about the function of a word in a sentence. Sometimes, one word can function as more than one part of speech. So, whenever you look for a new word in a dictionary, always make sure to see what part of speech it is. This will help you to understand the word and its usage in a sentence. 

Here are the 8 parts of the speech:

1. Noun

A noun is a name, place, thing, or idea.
Example:-

  • Rita lives in India.
  • She is admired for her honesty.

2. Pronoun

A pronoun replaces a noun. Some common pronouns are it, she, he, anyone, they, etc.
Example:-
  • She lives in India.
  • I don't know how anyone can believe that.

3. Verb

A verb shows action.
Example:-
  • She is dancing.
  • He brought food.

4.  Adjective

An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun.
Example:
  • She is a good dancer.
  • It is a beautiful painting.

5. Adverb

An adverb describes a verb, adjective, and adverb too.
Example:-
  • Unfortunately, I failed the test.
  • He ran quickly.

6. Preposition

A preposition links a noun to another word. Some common prepositions are on, in, under, before, after, etc.
Example:-
  • I am at the office.
  • My cat hid under the table.

7. Conjunction

A conjunction joins two clauses or sentences. Some common conjunctions are and, but, or, while, etc.
Example:-
  • I was sad today but you made me laugh.
  • I like apples and chocolates.

8. Interjection

An interjection is a short exclamation.
Example:-
  • Oh! I didn't see you.
  • Wow! This is very beautiful.
